What a phenomenal experience I had with the students during my seminar at Evergreen Park
Community High School in Evergreen Park Illinois. The teachers should stand proud because
their hard work certainly comes through in the students. The students should continue to stand
proud because of the positive image they reflect within themselves, each and every one of them.
Their respect for literature simply knocked me off my feet! They all enjoyed my novel Xceptance
as much as I enjoyed reading and discussing it with them. I say to each of you and other students
alike continue to greatness, and no matter what you may be going through now in your lives good
or bad let NOTHING stand in your way Ever… no matter who or what it may be always remember
you have yourself to answer to in the end. Make the right decisions and follow your dreams, trust
me they do come true!
I thank you for the experience and Tony and I will cherish our gathering for a lifetime!
Warmest regards
~Dena

Binx—everybody knows her. She is a daughter, niece,
sister, cousin, friend, neighbor, student, co-worker.
Young, vulnerable, beautiful, smart, and trapped by that
thing called fear. In “Black Beans ‘n Rice”, the author
takes you on a fast-paced reading journey from pain to
peace with all the ups, downs, twists, and turns in
between. It’s just under 300 pages, but the pages turn
fast as you sense every fear when her abuser’s name is
mentioned, every lump in the throat when the phone ring
as you scream, “Binx, don’t answer it.” Only relaxing
when you learned it wasn’t “him” this time. You will hate
those who mistreat her and worship the real friends she
has. You’ll cry with her, and in the end, you are right
there smiling when she finally learns to trust again, and
allows herself to be loved. Binx finds happiness while
teaching the world how to forgive.
